Who are we looking for?

We're currently partnering with a leading Australian energy company seeking an experienced Commercial Lawyer to join its high-performing legal team on an interim basis.

This opportunity will see you supporting a significant and diverse portfolio of generation assets, including coal and gas-fired power stations, wind farms, battery energy storage systems (BESS) and hydro assets. Working closely with operational and corporate stakeholders, you'll provide strategic legal support across a broad range of commercial, project and regulatory matters.

The ideal candidate will bring strong experience in contract drafting and negotiation, enjoy working on complex commercial issues, and be comfortable operating in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities.

About the Role

  • Draft, review and negotiate a broad range of commercial agreements supporting generation and infrastructure assets

  • Provide legal advice on commercial, operational and project-related matters

  • Support matters across energy, construction, corporate, property and dispute resolution disciplines

  • Lead complex legal matters and transactions where required

  • Represent the business in commercial negotiations with contractors, suppliers and project partners

  • Provide strategic advice on regulatory developments and their impact on the business

  • Identify, assess and manage legal and commercial risks across projects and operations

  • Work closely with business leaders and stakeholders to deliver practical, commercially focused advice

  • Support business initiatives and organisational change arising from evolving regulatory requirements

  • Deliver high-quality legal services while managing multiple priorities and tight deadlines

About You

You will be an experienced commercial lawyer who enjoys partnering closely with the business, solving complex problems and delivering pragmatic legal advice in a dynamic environment.

You will:

  • Have significant experience drafting, reviewing and negotiating complex commercial contracts

  • Possess the ability and desire to expand your expertise across legal areas relevant to energy and infrastructure assets, including energy, construction, corporate law, property and dispute resolution

  • Have experience leading complex legal matters and transactions

  • Demonstrate strong commercial acumen and practical problem-solving skills

  • Be confident representing the business in sophisticated commercial negotiations

  • Have the ability to provide strategic advice on regulatory developments and business impacts

  • Build strong, trusted relationships with stakeholders across all levels of an organisation

  • Be committed to delivering exceptional client service

  • Possess outstanding written and verbal communication skills

  • Communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders and adapt your approach accordingly

  • Thrive in a fast-paced environment and be able to manage competing priorities while meeting tight deadlines
