Information about the business and team
Our client is a FTSE100 global medical technology company specialising in three key areas: orthopaedics, sports medicine and ENT, and advanced wound management. In recent years, the organisation has undergone a major operational shift — transitioning from a recovery?focused strategy to a high?growth model centred on productivity, innovation, and expansion into fast?growing markets.
A significant part of this transformation includes substantial investment in digital surgery and robotic platforms to modernise traditional clinical procedures. The business has also accelerated its progress through targeted acquisitions to strengthen its product portfolio, enhance specialist capabilities, and stabilise its supply chain. Combined, these initiatives position the organisation as a stronger competitor across the medical device sector.
The Legal Team
The legal function consists of around 30 people split between the UK and the US. This role will sit within the operations?focused side of the legal team, with an additional reporting line into the IP function. The IP team is primarily focused on patents, trademarks and copyrights and currently does not have the capacity or specialist focus to handle the specific project at hand. The broader team is collaborative, forward?thinking and keen to welcome someone who can support during an important period of growth and change.
What the Client Needs Help With
As the business continues to expand — particularly through the creation and acquisition of new IP — it requires someone who can work closely with R&D and other internal teams to ensure IP?related legal considerations are addressed at the right stage of the innovation and product development lifecycle.
They are looking for someone who can lead an information?gathering exercise across the organisation and then develop the tools, templates and training needed to standardise and improve internal processes. This is an excellent opportunity for a lawyer interested in transformational work and driving meaningful, long?lasting improvements in how legal supports innovation.
What the Role Will Involve
Reviewing and improving the end?to?end R&D and IP contracting process (from early development through to commercial launch), including identifying key legal touchpoints
Creating internal risk?position playbooks for IP terms in contracts and development agreements, working in collaboration with the IP team
Developing consistent templates or standard mark?ups for handover to permanent legal counsel
Partnering with the business development and IP teams to build a playbook for strategic and corporate development deals
Delivering training to upskill the legal team once new systems and processes are in place
Exploring opportunities to improve the commercialisation of collaboration agreements
What Skills They Need
Strong experience with IP transactional agreements
Demonstrable project management capability
Experience working closely with R&D teams and advising them on what is and isn’t possible from an IP/legal perspective
Ability to manage multiple internal stakeholders discreetly and effectively
Working Arrangements
The client is flexible and open to different working patterns, given the niche nature of the role — ranging from hourly work to full?time
Fully remote role, with the option to visit the Croxley office (near Watford), particularly at the start of the assignment
Start date: ASAP
Duration: 6–9 months
IR35: Both employed and PSC models considered

What does the client need help with?
A senior lawyer is leaving at the end of February, creating a gap in the legal team while recruitment for a permanent replacement is underway. They need interim support to assist with ongoing matters and provide additional capacity for a major governance project.
What will the role involve?

You will act as a safe pair of hands, taking on delegated work and working alongside the GC
What skills do they need?
A generalist lawyer with strong governance experience, ideally someone comfortable working across multiple areas of law and supporting organisational governance projects.
